FLAMEnet 2025 Conference

FLAMEnet Past, Present, and Future: Building resilience in undergraduate science education

About the Conference:

Dates: Wednesday, June 18th - Friday, June 20th (see below for more details)
Location: In-person (at Georgia State University, in Atlanta GA) and Virtual

Application Deadline: Friday, March 28, 2024

Join us for an exciting conference!

We are excited to bring you FLAMEnet’s Annual Meeting in 2025! This meeting will bring together 8 years of experience as an NSF-funded research coordination network and consider strategies to take us into the future. We aim to facilitate discussions and activities to reflect on all that you have accomplished as FLAMEnet members, all that we continue to do as stakeholders in undergraduate science education, and all that FLAMEnet can be for us going into the future!

This year, our annual meeting will take place in-person at Georgia State University, with a synchronous virtual option.

In this workshop, our goals are to::

  1. engage with the different non-cognitive factors that impact our students, our peers, and ourselves through facilitated workshops and guided by the theoretical framework of failure (Henry et al., 2019),

  2. develop plans to apply and evaluate educational interventions in our courses and institutions that address these non-cognitive factors to support students and colleagues, and

  3. shape the future of FLAMEnet as a self-sustaining community of change agents who work in unique institutional contexts and collaborate to multiply our impact supporting students through challenging science experiences

Thanks to the support of the NSF*, we will be able to cover lodging and meals at this workshop. A limited amount of funding is available to cover travel costs for those with financial need. *If we have to pivot to a fully virtual conference based on the funding climate, we will inform you as soon as we find out!

As part of your application, we will ask you to identify non-cognitive factors or work done by other FLAMEnet members in areas like alternative assessment - based on your current interests and institutional needs. At FLAMEnet 2025, we'll work collaboratively to build your interest and knowledge into a timely and feasible plan of action - like building new curricular material for your collegiate contexts.

If you would like to participate, please apply by Friday, March 28, 2025! We look forward to learning more about you and your goals for participating in the workshop. We will review applications and be back in touch by mid-April!

(If you would like to attend but have conflicts that will preclude completing this application please let us know)

Additional Information of Interest

I would like to attend but don't have travel support. What can I do?

We can offer travel support to attend the conference if you do not have travel support from your institution.

Where should I stay for the conference?

FLAMEnet will book the venue, hotel accommodations and will cover meals for the duration of the conference. If you plan to stay in Atlanta the 20th night onwards, you will have to find alternative accommodation (or pay for additional nights at the conference hotel).

What will be expected of me at the conference?

Come to the conference planning to learn! As we will provide learning experiences around non-cognitive factors at the workshop, you do not have to come in with any prior knowledge. We will work together in groups and have opportunities to network, so be ready for those experiences as well!

What can I expect to gain at the conference!

Come to the conference planning to learn! On the first day, you will develop goals for your learning and how you plan to implement your learning in your professional context. Using that, we will work together to build a plan that you can take back to your institution to improve science education experiences for your students, colleagues, and/or faculty!
